GREETINGS
Welcome to our first grade world. I am proud and excited to be your child's first grade teacher and your partner for this school year. We have many adventures in academic and social growth ahead. This year brings new challenges for your child in the nature and scope of class assignments, work habits and levels of responsibility. It is important to me that we work as partners in developing your child's educational development. Together we can work to make their learning meaningful and fun. If there is ever a question or concern you would like to discuss with me please do not hesitate to reach me through the school phone (626) 974-4000, or email at [email protected].
READ! READ! READ!
Your child needs to read an average of thirty minutes every day outside of school in order to become a successful, fluent reader. Make reading an important part of your whole family's life now, and your child will reap the rewards for a lifetime. This is particularly true for first and second graders. By the time your child enters second grade he/she will be expected to be able to read a wide variety of phonetically-spelled words, plus all of the high frequency words they will be introduced to through our reading program. By the time your child enters third grade they will be expected to be a fluent reader who is "reading to learn", rather than "learning to read". Lots of reading, in school and outside of school, is the only way to make sure your child succeeds. Make this year count!
ATTENDANCE
Please make sure your child attends school regularly and is on time. We can not teach to an empty chair. School begins at 8:07 and children are expected to line up at that time. If your child must miss school due to medical reasons or any other emergencies in the family, please call the office or send a note so they may properly log it. Prompt, regular attendance is mandatory by law.
UNIFORMS
Uniforms are mandatory unless a waiver is signed and on file at the office. Our uniform consists of navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, skirts, or jumpers and white, navy, or red tops. Any shirt or t-shirt that contains the Barranca logo, or AR U (Accelerated Reader Univ.) is considered uniform. Your child needs to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes that are safe for playground activities and pants that can stay up properly.
HOMEWORK
Students are expected to complete homework, just as they are expected to do their work in class. Please help your child develop responsible homework habits. All homework assigned is designed to help children practice skills required by grade-level standards, and reinforce concepts learned in class. Incomplete work, whether homework or class assignments, will affect their report card.
