READING RESPONSE JOURNAL
Barranca first graders are expected to read for at least 15 minutes every day. Please use this journal to respond to your reading daily. You may choose the type of response from the ideas listed below.
At the top of each page students need to write: the date, title of the book, and the author’s name. Then choose one idea from the boxes below and show your best effort. Journals are to be completed and returned for credit each Thursday.
Each student will need to be responsible and have a minimum of 3 entries per week. (Thursday to Thursday) You may be flexible with the days and use weekends if you prefer.
Listed below are the choices (found glued to the inside of the front cover) your child has to choose from to respond to their books. Notice that the responses become more detailed after the Christmas break.
(1) (Sept. – Nov.)
Draw a picture of your favorite part of
the story.
(Dec. – June)
Draw a picture of your favorite
part of the story and write 3 sentences
describing the picture and what’s happening.
(2) (Sept. – Nov.)
Who is your favorite character in the
book? Write 1-2 sentences about them.
(Dec. – June)
Write 4-5 sentences. Use descriptive language
to tell me about your character and why they were your favorite.
(3) (Sept. – Nov.)
Write a letter to the author and tell him/her what
you liked about the book.
(Dec. – June)
In your letter, give the author an idea on something
you would change in the story.
(4) (Sept. – Nov.)
Connect the reading to your own life.
Did it remind you of something you have seen, read, or heard?
Write 1-2 sentences.
(Dec. – June)
Write 4-5 sentences and use good describing language.
(5) (Sept. – Nov)
Write a question about something you
wondered about during your reading.
(Dec. – June)
Explain what you had or did not read in the story
that made you think of the question .
(6) (Sept. – Nov.)
The setting is where the story takes place.
Draw a picture of the setting and write 1-2 sentences describing it.
(Dec. – June)
Draw a picture and write4-5 sentences explaining
the setting using good descriptive language.
